For schools
Build capability before you build more policy.
AI is already inside teaching, learning and professional work. The practice around it is uneven. A policy can set boundaries; it cannot build the judgement people need to apply them on Monday.
The challenge
A written position does not automatically become lived practice.
Some educators are already experimenting. Some are careful or unconvinced. Some are using AI in useful ways without shared language around privacy, verification, assessment or learner thinking.
Leaders need a way to understand where capability is developing — without turning staff development into surveillance or ranking.
Start with where people are
Use the 5D reflection across a staff group to see aggregate capability patterns before choosing professional learning. Individual results stay with the educator; the institution sees the cohort pattern and practical priorities.
Capability
DECIDE
Human-centred judgement, privacy, responsibility, access and appropriate non-use.
Capability
DIRECT
AI understanding, direction, iteration, verification and tool choice.
Capability
DESIGN
Learning outcomes, task alignment, scaffolding and learner thinking.
Capability
DEMONSTRATE
Assessment conditions, evidence of learning, feedback and learner judgement.
Capability
DEVELOP
Workflow, value, evidence-informed improvement and professional learning.
A practical school pathway
-
01
Reflect
Invite staff to complete the developmental reflection privately. See the starting point.
-
02
Prioritise
Review aggregate patterns and choose the capability areas that matter most for your context.
-
03
Learn
Run targeted professional learning rather than a generic “AI tools” session.
-
04
Apply
Move the learning into real planning, teaching, assessment and team workflows.
-
05
Revisit
Return to the reflection or other evidence later to see what changed and what still needs work.
Ways to work with us
Starting point
Staff capability reflection
Individual 5D profiles plus an aggregate school view: patterns and priorities, not names and rankings.
Leaders
Leadership session
Clarify institutional purpose, boundaries, governance questions and the professional learning sequence.
Professional learning
Educator workshop
A focused half- or full-day session built from the problems your educators actually face.
Programme
Term capability programme
A sequenced programme across staff, application and follow-through — with parent or learner components where useful.
Community
Parent evening
Help families understand the school’s position, the learning questions underneath AI use, privacy and practical home boundaries.
Learners
Learner / teen programme
Build practical AI judgement: privacy, verification, prompting, responsible use and keeping learning honest.
What leaders receive
- A cohort picture of the five capability areas rather than an overall “AI score”.
- Priority areas for professional learning and suggested sequence.
- Clear separation between individual reflection and organisational reporting.
- Practical recommendations that can be applied with the school’s approved tools and policies.
- A baseline that can be revisited after real practice.
Privacy position
Individual profile results stay with the educator unless a participant explicitly chooses otherwise. Institutional reporting should be aggregate and should not be used as employment selection or performance appraisal.
Questions school leaders ask
Will this tell staff to use AI more?
No. It helps staff decide where AI belongs, where it needs boundaries and where a non-AI approach is better.
Do we need new software?
No. The capability approach is tool-agnostic and can be applied inside the organisation’s approved environment.
Do we have to buy a full programme?
No. Start with a conversation, a staff reflection or a focused session and decide from there.
What about student and staff data?
The professional learning explicitly teaches data minimisation and appropriate environments. Final delivery should follow the institution’s privacy and tool rules.
