Parents & Families

For parents & families

You do not need to know more about AI than your child to have a useful conversation about it.

You need a sensible line: where AI can help, where it starts doing the thinking for them, what should stay private, and what the family will do when the school rules are unclear.

Parents · caregivers · families with teens

The situation

Constant use can look like confidence. It is not always the same thing.

A teenager may be completely comfortable opening an AI tool and still have no reliable way to judge whether the answer is accurate, what information is safe to share, or when “help” has turned into outsourcing the work.

The goal at home is not to police every prompt. It is to build enough shared judgement that the conversation can survive a real homework deadline.

Four conversations worth having

Help vs outsourcing

Schoolwork

What is this task supposed to show? What part does the learner need to do themselves? What help is permitted by the teacher or school?

Accuracy

Trust

AI can sound certain and still be wrong. What needs checking before it becomes an answer, claim or decision?

Data

Privacy

What personal, school, family or other people’s information should never be entered into a public tool?

Learner ownership

Thinking

Can AI support explanation or practice without replacing the reading, reasoning, writing or problem-solving the child needs to develop?

Three questions

A simple family position

1. What is this task for? 2. What does the child need to do themselves? 3. If AI helps, what needs checking or declaring?
